The collection consists of Gutachten (medical reports) on behalf of Dr. Muller’s patients, who had been victims of Nazi persecution and were submitting restitutjon claims to the German government.

In the years 1943–1945 YIVO conducted a project to gather materials on Jewish life in Europe. The project was conceived in 1943 when it became clear that the European Jewish community faced total destruction. The Museum of the Homes of the Past was to house artifacts and documents commemorating Jewish life as it existed before the Holocaust. The collecting campaign produced large quantities of letters, documents, photographs, artifacts and memorabilia.

The collection consists mainly of correspondence between Jews in the United States and their relatives in Europe. There is also correspondence of YIVO with the donors of the letters.
